Our Big Adventure to the Channel Islands on 11th July
With three passengers aboard Spartan, we departed for the Channel Islands according to schedule on Monday, 11th July.
The crossing to Alderney took a little longer than anticipated as we ran into fog banks … twice.
At least the crew had a chance to experience a Channel fog, and to practice what we preach on our powerboat training courses – you know … safe speed, single blast on the fog horn at least every two minutes and using all available means to maintain an effective lookout. We had a man on the bow and someone monitoring the RADAR at all times in the reduced visibility.
When we eventually arrived, Alderney was fog free and enjoying superb weather as the photos show. The trips to the other islands all went as planned with Sark requiring us to use our inflatable dinghy to get ashore as we had to leave Spartan on a mooring buoy.
We came home on one of those idyllically smooth seas, cruising at a steady 33 knots all the way, and making the Channel crossing in under two hours.
We are already making plans for the 2012 trip to the Scilly Isles and two out of the eight available places have already been reserved. For further information about our Big Adventure 2012, click here.
